Year Round Sports
The purpose of our genius hour project was to not only be a source of income for us throughout the summer, but it was to help us better understand the fundamentals of starting up and running a business while helping kids at the same time.
We knew that the first step to starting a business was finding a solution to a problem, and that is exactly what we did. We constantly were seeing kids who were not playing sports or who were giving them up because they didn’t possess the skills necessary to be successful. Kids who are struggling with a certain subject, whether it be sport related or not, tend to quit on that subject due to anger or frustration.
The next step for us was to research the steps necessary to starting a business. We knew we could just get by with running our business under the table for cash and not get in any big trouble, but we were driven to take the right steps and start up our company legitimately. Our next step was to register our company as a limited liability corporation, or LLC. We ended up selecting the name Year Round Sports because of our broad knowledge and experience in sports during all seasons of the year.
After taking the appropriate actions in starting our company, we needed to start researching our target crowd and demographics of our area in order to have a better understanding of our marketing campaign. We knew coming in to this endeavor that our job marketing our business would either make us or break us. Luckily, I believe that we marketed ourselves the best we could and we will continue to prioritize our marketing efforts.
The best part about our business is that we are constantly sharing our knowledge. Just doing what we do and giving these lessons to kids, we teach them the vast knowledge and experience we have had with these certain sports in hopes that they will retain and pass on our guidance. The opportunity at hand is not just one to make money, but it is the chance to bring a youngster into a sport, help someone find a passion, and truly impact a child’s life through sports as it has impacted us.
However, on the business side of things, we have to create either Youtube videos or instructional videos of some sort to help someone else who is thinking about starting a business, realize the steps necessary in doing so. The three of us who founded Year Round Sports, were fortunate enough to have gone through a business class and had a brief understanding of starting a business. With these videos, someone who wasn’t as fortunate as we were would be able to take some of our knowledge and apply it to their own journey.
If I were to do our genius hour project differently I would put more time into it. It was difficult to get all we needed to get done using only the time given in class. I know we could have gotten a lot more accomplished and been much farther along in our business endeavor if we would have spent more time accomplishing the necessary steps to complete our business plan.
Another step I would have done differently was in creating the business plan. If I were to do it over i would have sought out the advice from an experienced professional for ideas on the startup of our business. With the guidance of a professional, our adventure would have gone much smoother and we could have avoided many of the roadblocks we encountered.
Throughout our entire project we had many successes and accomplishments. We successfully made a business plan and took the steps necessary to starting a business. We also created a logo with a catchy name and figured out our target market and how to productively market our company.
Even our failures were a way to show us the right way to do things. Although we had some failures, we see that as a learning experience which in turn was a major success for us. Although we didn’t hit all of our goals on schedule, that taught us fundamental time management skills and a better ability to budget time for certain tasks. All the learning experiences we had became the greatest successes for us and our business.
